Discovering that you are Pregnant

Jun 06

A friend of mine took a trip down to the hills with two other couples over a weekend marked by scorching heat. By the time all of us were headed back home, things were not quite fine with her. She looked pale as sin and needed to go to the not too public-friendly bathrooms on the way all too often and looked plainly miserable. I noticed that her feet were heavy. I asked her, “sweets, are you ok?” And she said that she had an infection down under and she was in extreme pain every time she urinated. I carry Mycitracin, which is a triple action first aid ointment for preventing infection and speeding the healing process, with me in my handbag most of the time. I passed it on to her and voila…. she managed to sleep for 2 hours, with her head placed on her husband’s lap, after applying Mycitracin to the affected area. The first thing she did after returning home and eating some much-needed food after a long and tiring drive, was heading straight to the hospital’s emergency. She was diagnosed with a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and given antibiotics for 7 days along with a syrup. She was also advised to drink loads of water.

I remember that she resisted taking the antibiotics till 3 days, and then she saw blood in her urine and the pain did not decrease. That was it for her! Seven days of antibiotics and she was fine. Last day of antibiotics was marked by very light spotting which worried her.

Interestingly she noticed that her period was late! She blamed the UTI and the general stress for the late period. She has been recently married and did not want to raise the expectations of her spouse or herself as far as expecting a pregnancy was concerned. When a few days passed by, they decided to do a home pregnancy test after buying 2 tests from a local pharmacy. One test to check for pregancy, and second, well to prove the test further. And both the tests were positive.  Two gorgeous strong pink lines on the strips proved that she was pregnant. Just when she thought that either she or her husband could possibly have a problem with conceiving, God had given them a gift to rejoice and celebrate, and had provided evidence that was contrary to her worst fears. But her concerns would not leave her… what did her UTI in such early pregnancy mean? Did it cause any harm to her baby? Could the antibiotics do any harm? She got an appointment with a gyneacologist but that was 2 days away. Curiosity killed the cat and she so did not want that to happen to her… so she checked the Internet and browsed through many websites trying to check what her symptoms really meant. But all her concerns weren’t answered by her search.
